Credit Reports Q&A

Q: I fell into debt during a serious illness and my credit score dropped significantly. I heard that much of the negative information had to stay there for seven years. How can I clean up my credit report sooner?
A: Unfortunately, there is no way to remove accurate records before their expiration date. If the records are inaccurate, however, that's a different story and can be disputed. Positive records (such as closed accounts that were never paid late) can remain on your credit report for longer than seven years and will only help your credit score.
