For many veterans, the transition to civilian life brings both opportunities and challenges, especially when it comes to financial security and career readiness. TransUnion’s Head of Financial Services, Jason Laky, recently welcomed U.S. Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) to speak to TransUnion associates about how Congress and the private sector can work together to support our nation’s veterans.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Judiciary Committee, Congressman Fitzgerald brings a unique perspective on how policy impacts economic opportunity. Congressman Fitzgerald emphasized that while Congress plays a critical role, the private sector is equally important in addressing challenges veterans face, such as housing, mentorship, and workforce transition.
Wisconsin is home to more than 300,000 veterans, and Congressman Fitzgerald has been a strong advocate for programs that help veterans reintegrate successfully. Congressman Fitzgerald himself served 27 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military experience continues to shape his work in Congress, where he advocates for legislation that improves the quality of life for servicemembers and veterans.
Those efforts include protecting education benefits, expanding access to mental health resources, and ensuring that those who served receive the care and opportunities they earned.
Fitzgerald highlighted the need for collaboration to create pathways for employment and financial stability, noting that companies can play a vital role in helping veterans leverage their skills and experience in meaningful careers. Ryan Stalker, Vice President of TransUnion’s Veterans Alliance, also joined the conversation to underscore the importance of supporting veterans in their transition to civilian life -- a priority the Congressman has championed throughout his career. He shared that the private sector is an essential partner in this effort, helping create opportunities that complement legislative initiatives.
The conversation also focused on the importance of protecting veterans from financial fraud, a growing concern that impacts servicemembers and their families. Congressman Fitzgerald shared how his positions on both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Financial Services Committee have made this issue a priority, as fraud prevention is critical to ensuring financial security for those who served.
TransUnion shares that commitment. Through our mission of Information for Good, we work to expand financial inclusion and provide tools that help veterans and their families access credit and achieve stability. Our partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs on TruContact™ Trusted Call Solutions is one example of how technology can reduce fraud and improve trust, helping veterans feel secure in their financial interactions.
Supporting veterans is a shared mission between public and private sector partners. By working together, we can create a future where every veteran has access to the resources, opportunities, and respect they deserve. TransUnion remains grateful to Congressman Fitzgerald for a meaningful discussion and look forward to further efforts delivering on our mission of Information for Good®.
