Q2 2026 highlights: Credit access expands as growth remains measured

Consumer credit continued to expand in Q2 2026, with nearly 262 million consumers carrying a credit balance and total outstanding balances reaching $18.6 trillion. Yet the most important credit insights from the quarter may be less about growth itself and more about how lenders are managing it. As credit access broadened across the market, balance growth remained measured and portfolio performance generally stayed stable despite ongoing affordability pressures. These credit trends suggest many institutions are successfully balancing growth opportunities with disciplined portfolio management and a measured risk strategy.

As Jason Laky, Executive Vice President and Head of Financial Services at TransUnion®, noted during the quarter, lenders continue to expand access to credit while navigating a complex economic environment through approaches like smaller credit lines and disciplined lending practices. The result is a market where organizations are pursuing a sustainable growth strategy while maintaining focus on performance and resilience.

The latest findings reveal important differences across lending products. Credit card and personal loan originations continued to grow, home equity lending remained strong and affordability challenges continued to shape consumer behavior in the auto market. For financial services leaders, these developments provide valuable perspective on how borrower needs, portfolio performance and lending strategies are evolving across today's market.
