Spring Gig Economy Consumer Report

The TransUnion® Spring Gig Economy Consumer Report explored the household demographics of gig consumers — and the results were striking. Though overall usage of traditional gig services was similar among households with and without children, households with children emerged as “power users,” as defined by a significantly higher likelihood of using gig services once or multiple times a week. When it comes to trust and safety, the survey showed users reported overall satisfaction with gig platforms’ trust and safety features — but 4 out of 10 users are worried about fraud or scams.

Findings include:

  • Nearly one quarter (23%) of households with children said they spend more than $500 per month on gig services compared to just 5% of households without children
  • Cost and convenience were universally identified as the top reasons for using gig services, but households with children also indicated a particular affinity for promotions and loyalty programs
  • More than a quarter (26%) of respondents reported encountering fraud or a scam
  • Worker identity verification was cited as the most important step platforms can take to reduce fraud and help ensure safety (67%)
