Spotting Potential Scams After a Disaster

Unfortunately, some fraudsters use natural disasters as opportunities to get consumers’ personal information and money. They may pose as a business or pretend to be from the government to access your information.

Fraudsters can also use stolen identity details to falsely claim assistance from programs helping victims. These are known as imposter scams.

If you’re recovering from a natural disaster, these tips can help you recognize imposter scams:

  • Was it unsolicited? Scammers don’t wait around for potential victims; they initiate contact. For example, they may offer “help” you never requested to solve a problem you were not aware of
  • Are they rushing you? Scammers will fake emergencies to get you to act quickly and seem more convincing
  • Do you feel scared? If you feel threatened or intimidated, you probably aren’t talking to a professional
  • Are there other similar stories online? Do a quick Google search and see if there have been other reports with similar experiences
  • Are they asking for personal info? Legitimate organizations will rarely contact you directly for this data
  • Do they ask for payment? Scammers will ask for methods that are difficult to track, like gift cards or wire transfers
